The High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction mourns the death of its founder, driving force, and leading advocate, Richard “Dick” Denny Jr. He passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, December 19, 2022.
Dick was an integral member of the High’s family for more than four decades. He served for many years as a museum trustee, eventually serving as Board Chair, and was ultimately honored as a Life Trustee. While his Museum participation and leadership took many forms, it was the Wine Auction that truly harnessed his (and his lovely wife Marg’s) energy and focus.
I’m sure many of you will fondly remember his feisty wit, mischievous humor, and his genuine passion for great wine, great food, and great friends. Year in and year out, the Wine Auction succeeded in blending each of those passions together in support of the Museum and our programs.
In fact, it’s nearly impossible to think of Dick without thinking of his singular role in founding and developing the Wine Auction. Similarly, one doesn’t typically think of the Wine Auction without thinking of its “Chief Taster.” Since its inception just over thirty years ago, the event has raised more than $37 million dollars.
Along the way, the High Museum of Art’s Wine Auction became a hallmark of the Museum’s patron engagement, a cornerstone of our fundraising efforts, and a signature Atlanta event — locally and nationally. Due to Dick’s unwavering commitment, as well as the inspiration and support he continuously provided to others involved, The Wine Auction is now admired as one of the nation’s premier fundraising events.
The truth is that the High Museum of Art, our programs, and impact would be sorely diminished without the historical and ongoing funds the Auction generates and supports. On behalf of the Museum’s board, professional staff, and our members, thank you Dick.

A memorial service will be held at The Cathedral of St. Philip on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at 2:00 PM. A reception will follow at Peachtree Golf Club.
